National and Regional Activities

PPGBBE participates in outreach activities that usually involve undergraduate and graduate PPGBBE students with strong social impact. Below are some examples.

The Department of Geology of the Institute of Geosciences of UFRJ created the Museum of Geodiversity, by Prof. Ismar Carvalho. The museum has a collection of 20,000 copies of minerals and fossils, petroleum types, maps and objects from the geological and biological history of our country. The exhibition connects the past and the future, and it occupies a 400m2 space since 2008.

This network aims to control, though genetic identification, fish (and other marine animals) commercialized in Brazil for domestic use and foreign trade. This will guarantee the international price of the product marketed abroad, avoiding trading fraud: Micropogonias furnieri (corvina), Ocyurus chrysurus (Guaiuba), Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (seven-bearded shrimp), Panulirus spp. (lobsters), Crassostrea spp. (oysters) and Mytella spp. (sururus).

Development of diagnostic kits for PCR identification of mussels and oysters marketed in our country. The objective is to assist fishery professionals to developing small local areas to cultivate these species: Crassostrea spp. (oysters) and Mytella spp. (sururus).

Geological knowledge has captured great public interest, through the observation of geological exhibits, visits to museums and centers of science, scientific discoveries, such as new fossils and minerals. Therefore, Prof. Ismar has a project to implement the Geopark in the triângulo mineiro, in the State of Minas Gerais, a geologicalpark that will integrate societywith minerals and fossils.

Tijuca National Park is one of the largest urban forests in the world. With this project, they hope to transform tourists and visitors regular into amateur naturalists. The “Science in the Forest” is an annual event, which takes place in the Tijuca Forest with exhibitions, workshops and lectures and it is open to all.

Prof. Ricardo Moratelli coordinates the Citizen Science Program of the Campus Fiocruz Mata Atlântica. This program includes projects that involve local community and high school students in the biotic and abiotic monitoringand in the management of biodiversity. It takes place in the Fiocruz Mata Atlântica Biological Station and surrounding areas. Some of these projects may generate social technologies developed locally.

Interfaces with Basic Education

All those working in science must bear in mind some of the challenges we face today: popularizing science, encouraging young people to pursue scientific careers, and bringing knowledge and society closer together. For Education professionals, in formal or in non-formal spaces, instrumentalizing students with tools that allow them to know, problematize, intervene and dialogue critically is a primordial task.
